Roger and Crystal both graduated from Calvary Bible College in Kansas
City, MO with their undergraduate degrees. Roger continued on
at the Seminary to finish his Masters of Arts in 1994. In 1994,
they moved to northeast Brazil. They currently work in Maceió,
Brazil which has around 800,000 habitants. They work with the
Esperanca Church which is around a 100 people and hope to help
the church reproduce two more churches in this needy city.
Roger and Crystal Johansen are currently serving in the capital
city of Maceió, Alagoas. They have three boys, which
are homeschooled, ages 8, 5, and 2. The Lord lead them to Maceió
just after they finished language school in July 1995. During
their first two years there they worked under two vetern couples
in the first BGFM church plant in Maceió. From that work,
a few nationals joined Roger and Crystal in beginning another
church plant in a different part of the city. Igreja Biblica
Batista Esperança's services began regularly in February
1999. Since the beginning of the work, there have been many
people who have come to know the Lord as Savior and have been
discipled. The Lord also blessed the Johansens by bringing the
Andersons to work with them less than a year after the work
had begun. The church now has it's own property and part of
it's building. Several people from the U.S. have come to visit
the work to know it better. Some have even participated in the
construction or done outreach ministries through the church,
as well as encouraging the believers in several ways.
Our current average attendance during our main service is at
about 90 people. Many are involved in Bible studies. This year,
five of our people will be studying at the Antioch Bible Insitutue
in Ceará. We have also been blessed with the arrival
of a national pastor, Eriomar, and his wife and daughter. In
February, seminary classes will be taught by Roger and others
in our church building. It is an extension of the SIBIMA seminary
in Fortaleza, Ceará, offering credit to those students
which might be interested. There are several who are taking
the classes simply to grow deeper in their understanding of
God's Word.
Pray for Igreja Biblica Batista Esperança (Hope Baptist
Bible Church) as Pastor Eriomar and his family become a part
of the family, and as we seek to reach out to two other nearby
areas that need a Bible-based church.
